Bare-knuckle Boxing Meets Wing Chun

Bare-knuckle Boxing (aka Classical Pugilism or Fisticuffs) is a distinctly American and Western European style of boxing. It is the original form of boxing. Before boxing had the many rules it has today, it was much more of art applicable for realistic street fighting. These modern-day rules restrict the practical street applicability of today's boxing.

Most people today would consider the original form of boxing not as evolved when comparing it to modern day boxing. But in fact, that way of thinking is comparing a sport with a street-fighting art. As self-defense, today’s boxing has lost much of its street effectiveness. On the contrary, the bare-knuckle fighter of old could handle himself exceptionally well against any would-be attacker.

Today bare-knuckle boxing is an almost forgotten, yet very effective street self-defense system. It involves sophisticated self-defense using fists, fingers, elbows, knees, feet and even the head. Incorporating certain key principles of bare-knuckle boxing has greatly improved our study and evolution of Wing Chun. We've been extremely successful in taking our Wing Chun to a longer range than is traditionally practiced by 99% of Wing Chun practitioners. This influence from bare-knuckle boxing also has made our training methods more realistic. Too many Wing Chun practitioners talk theory and don't practice real-world application. What's most important about our integration of bare-knuckle boxing principles is that we've been able to remain true to our purpose - self-preservation, not a sport. If we were to incorporate modern boxing movements tailored for winning rules-based bouts, we wouldn't have been able to keep this integrity.
